Description:

A very fine and rare Edwardian mahogany breakfront console or hall table in the manner of Adams, beautifully carved with rich patination, grain and adorned with intricately detailed Neoclassical motifs comprising of urn, swags, garlands, flowerhead and rams head detail throughout.  The well figured, moulded top of breakfront form with guilloche border is raised over a conforming panelled, single drawer frieze with fluted and beaded embellishment, centred with exquisitely carved urn and garland detail flanked with applied flowerhead paterae.  Supported on elegant tapering, square leg with gorgeous rams head, trailing bellhusk and foliate motifs, terminating on stylised tulip foot, labelled 'Maples of London'.  

Maple & Co.

Maple and Co. were one of the largest and most successful British furniture retailers and cabinet makers in the late 19th Century, Victorian and Edwardian periods. They were well known for exceptionally fine craftsmanship and were specialists in recreating classical designs in line with more modern trends. They produced many fine quality pieces of antique furniture inspired by designs in the manner of Adams, Hepplwhite and Chippendale amongst others. 

Maple & Co. was first established by John Maple in Tottenham Court Road, London and together with his son, also John, the business Maple & Co. became an unrivalled success.  With their skills in business and design, by the third quarter of the 19th Century they had become the largest furniture store in the world and were renowned throughout the interiors world, exporting their exceptionally fine antique furniture globally to many different countries.  During the late 19th and early 20th Century, Maple & Co. had showrooms and workshops in Paris and Buenos Aires as well as London.
