An exceptional Edwardian mahogany display case attributed to Edward and Roberts, London, with gorgeous patination, line inlaid and with exquisite marquetry detail depicting Neoclassical motifs of urns, ribboned swags of foliate, scrolls and anthemions throughout. The broken swan neck pediment raised over moulded stepped cornice above twin astragal glazed panel doors with decorative brass escutcheon and key, opening to lined, shelved interior. The serpentine base with four centred drawers flanked with two cupboard doors, all cross-banded and with beautifully ornate brass swan neck handles and escutcheons, supported on elegant, tapering out-splayed leg conjoined with serpentine undertier, number stamped on drawer.
Edward & Roberts
Edward and Roberts were founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist. Edward and Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.
