Description:

A very fine Edwardian richly patinated mahogany desk attributed to Edward and Roberts.  Line inlaid throughout and with fabulous marquetry detail depicting Neoclassical motifs of urns, scrolling foliate, flowerheads and trailing bell husks.  The moulded upper section with three quarter pierced brass gallery grille raised over an arrangement of drawers comprising of centred sloping middle section opening to reveal fitted interior, flanked with a set of two short cockbeaded drawers with brass pulls.  The moulded desk top below fitted with gorgeous green gilt embossed tooled leather writing skiver surface raised over frieze with single centred long drawers flanked with two short drawers, all cockbeaded with brass escutcheons and decorative pulls.  Supported on elegantly tapering square legs with fabulous marquetry detail of trailing bell husks, terminating on brass casters.

Edward & Roberts

Edward and Roberts were founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London.  By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century.  They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers working in a variety of styles, both modern and revivalist.  Edward and Roberts specialized in marquetry, inlay and ormolu.
